X-Cross Planning
Plan cross plus first F2L pair during inspection.
Goal
Start solves with cross+pair done efficiently and immediately enter flowing F2L.
Prerequisites
- Reliable cross planning in 15-second inspection
- Comfort with D-layer cross efficiency
- Basic F2L piece tracking during inspection
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- Step 1: Plan an efficient cross first (target <= 8 moves).
- Step 2: During inspection, identify one likely first pair and track where it lands after cross execution.
- Step 3: Add a short extension path so cross ends with pair-ready orientation.
- Step 4: Start solve with fixed rhythm: cross moves with no hesitation, then immediate first-pair insert.
- Step 5: Keep X-cross optional. If inspection is unclear, choose normal cross to avoid risky starts.
- Step 6: Review solve replays and compare cross-only vs X-cross outcomes for consistency.
Practice Drills
- Inspection Notebook: write planned cross + first pair before executing.
- X-Cross Attempts: force X-cross on easy scrambles only, then expand difficulty.
- Execution Fidelity: measure whether your executed moves match inspection plan.
Common Mistakes
- Overcomplicated inspection plans that cause DNF-level hesitation
- Ignoring cross efficiency while chasing X-cross
- Committing to weak first pair instead of adapting
